width="100" height="100" />Work-life satisfaction is lower in Britain than most European countries, according to the British Social Attitudes Survey 2012, released by social research agency NatCen earlier this week. Only Portugal, Russia and five other ex-communist countries recorded lower satisfaction levels. The survey also revealed 80 per cent of workers admitted worrying about work problems when at home, up from 73 per cent in 2004. Some 89 per cent admitted they sometimes felt too tired after work to enjoy activities at home. The survey attributes these dismal figures to a deterioration in job security and the longer working hours culture, which is endemic in most organisations. Oh dear, we are a rather stressed out bunch aren’t we? So perhaps it is time for us all to take a step back and make some changes. Fear not, help is at hand with National Work-Life Balance Week, starting next Monday. There will be free webinars on achieving a better work-life balance, building resilience and getting to grips with guilt, as well as “Go Home on Time Day” on Wednesday, an invitation for employees everywhere to down tools with enough time and energy left over to enjoy the rest of the day. Businesses will be encouraged to set up events to help people get the most out of their personal time, with suggestions ranging from organising social lunches to colleagues swapping useful skills over breaks. So, book me in for the ‘getting to grips with guilt’ seminar and maybe I can teach my colleagues a couple of tap dance steps on Tuesday lunchtime. But it’s just that I do have that article on career development to finish by Wednesday and the email newsletter to get out by the end of the week…
