What are your hotel horrors?

It may be a British cliché, but when I enter a hotel room the first thing I check is the tea and coffee-making facilities. As long as there is a kettle, some teabags, a small tube of coffee and a packet of biscuits - preferably shortbread - I feel I have got my money’s worth. So I was a little surprised not to find “poor hot beverage-making facilities” in a survey of travel bugbears by insurance company Direct Line. Top of the list was dirty linen and towels, with 77 per cent not willing to rest their head on stained sheets. The other horrors fielding the most complaints were; drunk/noisy neighbours late at night (72 per cent); nearby building works (also 72 per cent); poor quality food at the hotel (70 per cent) and holiday reps hassling you to join in on excursions (51 per cent). Surprisingly, bad weather didn’t make the top five. Perhaps we can accept the odd shower in a week of warm sunshine, when the UK is struggling to hit double figures in temperatures, with scarves and gloves currently still selling strongly in the shops. Of course, any of these grievances would make your two-week break a lot less enjoyable. But some of them can be easily avoided by your choice of hotel and more extensive research into the area. I certainly never travel without checking there will be a kettle in my room.
