I learned two valuable things yesterday as I watched yesterday’s football match between West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur from the comfort of my sofa. First of all, never turn down the opportunity of a ticket. Second - and more pertinent to procurement professionals - never underestimate just how valuable a single individual can be. Today, Tottenham Hotspur are up to third place in the Premier League for the first time this season and, like much of their success recently, owe an awful lot to the work of midfielder Gareth Bale. Having already scored one goal earlier in the game, Bale scored a stunning winner from outside the box in the dying moments of the game. Had he not been in the team last night, I’m almost certain they would not have triumphed. In football – especially in the case of Gareth Bale – it is easy to identify star qualities and what they can deliver. But the principle holds true in all walks of life. Irrespective of the size and scale of a procurement team, success relies on each individual facing up to the challenge. If you are lucky enough to have your very own Gareth Bale in your team, be grateful you don’t face wage demands in the region of more than £100,000 a week – and make sure you do what you need to keep hold of them.
