Fellows of the future, this is your opportunity

Matthew Row is goods for resale sourcing at Lloyds Banking GroupThe last few weeks have seen a plethora of press articles and debates surrounding education and development of talent.

We’ve had Vince Cable touring the country to launch the ‘Get in, Go Far’ campaign to promote apprenticeships, the Labour party calling for technical universities to refocus the education system on high tech industries and even the ongoing debate on whether the Football Association is doing enough to develop young British talent following record summer spending.

In the world of procurement we’ve also had an interesting development with a new apprenticeship scheme launched in Scotland to encourage young people into a career in purchasing and supply chain. The City of Glasgow College has opened its first industry academy for procurement and supply chain with the support of CIPS which will open up career opportunities in the profession that employs around 115,000 people across 12,400 companies in Scotland.

With the growing number of options to enter the profession across apprenticeships, graduate schemes, CIPS study and degree courses there has never been a better opportunity for talented individuals to find a career in procurement. Once in procurement it’s difficult not to become immersed in one of the most diverse and exciting business areas, with opportunities to lead organisational change, drive income and profitability, challenge yourself on a global stage and collaborate with some of the brightest business leaders.

In addition to the broad range of on the job development there is also increasing focus on off the job opportunities for future leaders to develop and thrive within the profession. From personal experience I have seen a big opportunity to provide greater support for MCIPS members to develop themselves as business leaders and subsequently achieve Fellowship. So we’ve done something about this by establishing working group comprising FCIPS and MCIPS members to set up the Fellows of the Future programme which aims to enthuse future procurement leaders to develop and progress.

Whether you want to engage in debate with the brightest Fellows in the profession, take on a big challenge in the world of procurement, or would simply value being mentored by a Fellow, come along and open your mind to the wealth of experience and exciting challenges this programme has to offer. There is no other programme within the procurement profession that offers access to such broad range of leaders and provides such significant off the job development. This is your time; this is your chance.
