The Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS) has awarded BAE Systems Military Air & Information (MAI) procurement function with a globally-recognised accreditation for its enthusiasm and commitment to improving their policies and strategies.

BAE Systems MAI’s procurement function consists of circa 600 team members handling more than 1900 approved suppliers and plays a critical role in support of business-winning activities; this is evident in the function’s commitment to achieving prestigious qualifications and awards including CIPS Corporate Certification.

CIPS Corporate Certification at platinum standard demonstrates an organisation delivers world-class procurement in terms of their level of influence, control, and involvement with partners, suppliers and internal colleagues. BAE Systems MAI's procurement processes and systems were found to be operating at high maturity levels, fully embedded within both the functional and operating area of the business, enabling the consistent fulfilment of UK and international export customer needs.

The certificate was received by Phil Thornber, BAE Systems MAI Commercial and Procurement Director and presented by Andrew Coulcher, CIPS Group Director of Knowledge and Membership on 23 March 2017.

Andrew Coulcher said: “Organisations achieving platinum standard are a part of the global elite.  The procurement team for BAE Systems MAI has created strategic value for their organisation through world-class procurement and supply chain management practices. They have an extremely robust and developed procurement function; with many team members reporting directly to the different sections of the business. This is an achievement they should be very proud of.”

Phil Thornber, FCIPS and BAE Systems MAI Commercial & Procurement Director said, “This is an excellent and very worthwhile piece of work. The findings from our CIPS certification journey will shape our procurement strategy and contribution for years to come.”

Nigel Cook, FCIPS, Head of BAE Systems MAI’s Commercial & Procurement Function and CIPS Certification Project Team Lead said, “The team have felt a real sense of achievement in completing the certification and are looking forward to applying the learning from this experience in the future at MAI, functional and individual level,”
