In line with our current sustainability policy CIPS recently reviewed the value of issuing members with an annual membership card. The environmental impact of producing the cards annually equates to approximately 1,432kg of CO2, more if we include the postage to all our members worldwide.
Before making any decisions concerning the future of the card we surveyed all our members who had previously indicated that they were happy to receive on-line communications. We asked their opinion as to the value of the card to them, and if they had any objections to the cards being discontinued.
We are delighted to say that we had the largest on-line response from any survey we have carried out, proving that our members share our concerns. A significant majority of the respondents confirmed that they would have no objections to the cards being discontinued.
In response to this overwhelming result CIPS is pleased to announce that it will cease issuing cards from 28 February 2013.
In recognition of this decision and the substantial reduction to the CIPS carbon footprint we have entered the project into The Guardian Sustainable Business Awards 2013. These awards are aimed at rewarding and acknowledging innovation and impact in corporate sustainability.
This will not affect the CPD programme as members reaching silver and gold level will now be issued with a certificate.
CIPS CEO David Noble said, ‘On behalf of CIPS we would like to thank all the members who took the time to complete the survey enabling us to reach a positive outcome for the environment.’
