Federal Government procurement contracts in the spotlight

Despite the commonwealth's procurement guidelines committing agencies to source at least 10 per cent of all contracts, by value, from small business, Finance Minister Senator Penny Wong said: "The government recognises the value small businesses bring to the economy, and the procurement figures reflect this."

Statistics have revealed that foreign telecom firms are being preferred ahead of local providers for government contracts. Teleconference firm Express Virtual Meetings found more than 70 per cent of federal departments and agencies commissioning teleconferencing services over the past two years had given business mostly to US companies.
