Laing O’Rourke, one of the top ten construction companies in the UK has received a Procurement Excellence Programme award from The Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply, the global professional body for supply chain management. The company was commended at standard level for its senior management and cross organisational interaction between departments and teams and for highlighting the procurement team as core to the commercial aspects of the business.
Laing O’Rourke funds, designs, manufactures, constructs and maintains the built environment – providing the facilities to accommodate, educate, employ, transport, care for and sustain communities.
PEP is a globally-recognised award presented to those organisations demonstrating excellence in their procurement and supply chain activities. The award drives regular improvements, value across supply chains and highlights procurement’s role as a fundamental part of an organisation’s strategy and effectiveness.
The team at Laing O’Rourke started the award process just as the worldwide pandemic hit, shining a spotlight on the resilience of the procurement team and using the audit to build a stronger team. The process enabled team members to expand their knowledge and skills, and understand the needs of their business.
Carol Williams, Head of Procurement at Laing O’Rourke explained why achieving this standard is so significant: “As a procurement function we are responsible for more than £1.2 billion-of annual procurement in our Europe Hub, with 60-70 per cent of our work through supply chain management.
“Achieving this standard is backing from our professional body that we have the right people, with the right professional competencies, processes and procedures in place. Many of our infrastructure clients have attained the same standard, so this demonstrates that we are aligned in our procurement standards. Our excellence in Supply Chain Management delivers value for all of our Clients.”
Alan Martin, Head of Procurement Excellence at CIPS said, “The procurement team at Laing O’Rourke could not have had a tougher environment to start the programme given all the challenges they had to keep daily operations functioning, staff taking exams and meeting the needs of PEP.
“They had very clear and professionally-based business objectives to understand their procurement needs and used PEP to create greater alignment with those goals. I congratulate the team wholeheartedly and wish them success in their continuing improvement journey.”
